Maybe it was the fresh sea air, the chance to visit the longest pier in the world, or simply the lure of a plate of jellied eels... But just like all those 'trippers' back in the day, top popsters Silvery couldn't resist a little excursion from 'the smoke' to Southend this weekend.
Excellent support from two local rowdy rockers Tuppenny Bunters and Son Of Buff set the scene a treat. Silvery thundered through a selection of songs from their two albums, finishing off with their cover of 'You Give A Little Love' from the Bugsy Malone soundtrack.
The venues PA left much to be desired, but didn't seem to mar anyones enjoyment too much (although my ears were ringing for a good 24 hours afterwards!).

It was all against them: the PA's perma-feedback, a detuned keyboard (first song only) and gig first for me - a broken bass string. Although none of these knockbacks handbraked Silvery's fizz or full speed ahead energy. And the audience, stage front, were having a seaside knees-up, bopping and high kicking to the band.
I woke up at 6:30 crashed and blurry on the settee - so must've been a good night.
Yer man's a dead ringer for Ron Sexsmith. Are they venturing north anytime soon?
They look like they're playing in someone's front room! Clearly sounded like it too from what you say. Still, sounds like a good time was had by all. Atmosphere can save the lamest PA sometimes.
Great pictures Piley. I am afraid the band were not my cup of darjeeling though. Might have enjoyed it more if the sound had been half decent.
Loved Son of Buff though.
Mondo - like you say, it was a fair collection of bad luck, but credit to em, they didn't let it get the better of them, and the whole room seemed to enjoy it. I did indeed notice the dancing at the front! Particularly during the Bugsy Malone track! Why the bloomin pearly king n queen of the ol Heast Hend of Lunnon woulda been prahd!
JM - well they both seem to wear jackets, so.... ;-) A good question, JJ asked the same question a few posts back. A trip oop North is well overdue the sparkly ones.
Cocktails - In a strange kind of way they were!! This is a cracking old style pub, and what was many years ago originally the living quarters upstairs, has been converted to a function room. A great atmos up there tho, I've go for that kind of venue any day.
Ta Marmite. Definitely think an improved PA would have helped matter for you. A tip top night out though, and great to bump into so many people there too.
