KEEPING IT PEEL: Podrophenia 11 - Sound-a-Likeys

To mark 'Keeping It Peel' day today (can it really be 6 years since the great man died??), Mondo and I have knocked up another Podrophenia podcast. This month's theme is 'Sound-a-likeys', but there's a (very!) loose Peel connection or two thrown in there too.

If you're being charitable, Sound-a-likeys are songs that have been created by artist with a love of music; an encyclopedic knowledge of song; and as their own writing has matured, the many artist that influenced them over the years has subconsciously become part of the mix.... or.... if you're not feeling quite that generous, a Sound-a-likey may have been made by someone without an original thought in their brain, and blatantly rips off everyone they can. There are ten Sound-a-likey examples in amongst the usual ol waffle in the new podcast.... you make your own mind up as to which camp they come from!

You can listen to it here:

Am a third of the way through and having a fine old time...just to flesh out the Bollock Brothers story, what actually happened was that, high on record company advance and a few other things, they literally kidnapped the bass player (Phil), and took him over to Ireland in the back of a van. He was locked in a room for a couple of days and then forced to 'come up with a bloody good bass riff for us'.

Phil was so genuinely terrified that his musical skills deserted him, and all he could remember was the riff to Gina X's 'No GDM'. In his traumatised state he churned out the terrible robotic version you can hear on 'The Bunker'.

Jock MacDonald was a dodgy old bugger...

Great pod yet again.
Have we established who the 'softly spoken' one is yet?

Listened to the remainder this afternoon and enjoyed it hugely, though I had to fast forward that Billy joel track! Loved that Sun headline you managed to track down, too - you can't beat a good poo joke really, can you?

Excellent work; looking forward to the next one already.

ISBW - Glad you liked it bar the Joel track - what was so wrong with it??!

Damn I forgot to say that I listened to this during the week. First off I'll say that they fly by, I wish they were at least half an hour longer.
However this was a gem of a poddy! Mondo bigging up Roxy was a real moment for me. I always wrote off Roxy as being crap after Eno left without really checking out the albums. About five years ago I discovered how wrong I was and realised that in fact the two that followed Eno's departure was easily as good as anything they had done. So good on you Mondo. I'm even into Avalon now so…
Anyway the real find for me this time round was the Bowie sound-alike. I'll be grabbing that twofer. Proper stuff that. Bowie the magpie eh? Little sod.

I meant were not was. Oops.

Glad you liked it Gary (what did you make of the Joel toon?!). Looking forward to hearing your new poddy soon Sir.

Well I don't have a problem with BJ (cough cough), I thought it was pretty decent. The real shocker for me was the Banana Splits track. When you said 'and of course it's by', I almost fell over! I'll have to get hold of a copy of that album.

It's a belter Gary, ptrtty much every tracks a winner, but they all sound quite different - Surf the blogs and you'll find a few evaluation copies, but I know you'll be wanting the vinyl (not cheap tho).

Lawrence said...

Well I'll keep an eye out for the vinyl, I've put an E-bay search in already. So we'll see what that throws up. I'm never in a huge rush with records though, I'm quite happy to wait until they turn up somewhere.

Piley said...

I see there's one up on ebay for only 90 odd quid!!! Free postage though, so not that bad! ;-)

Lawrence said...

Yeah it's all a bit mad over on E-bay when it comes to the Banana Splits. Never thought I'd have to think of shelling out that much! I'll have to have a think about it.

perhaps give the evaluation version a go before wadding out too much Gary... you might hate it!!

Yeah you could be right. But you know sometimes having the sleeve in front of you while the black stuff is doing it's thing on the turntable is very nice.
