Gypie was a great guitarist, but it pushed Lee into a more traditional 'front man' role in the process. I'da been happy to see either live to be honest!! First saw the band at the State Theatre in Grays just after Wilko left and Gyppy Mayo joined. Unfortunately there was only a couple of hundred people there (nothing to do with the band, more to do with the lack of advertising beforehand) but this didn't prevent the band from giving a great performance. Only other time I saw them was at the Kursaal where they were supported by Mink Deville.Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15938831260403899842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47636629640428119.post-47512212606496754652010-07-21T23:40:21.454+01:002010-07-21T23:40:21.454+01:00Heff - I think YOUR band would benefit from a name...Heff - I think YOUR band would benefit from a name chance to Pigboy Heff??!

Jacqui - that recording is available! A few years back they released a CD of all the BBC Feelgood sessions, and that Bob Harris set is on there. It's not a million miles away from the more familiar version, but is certainly a little slower. However not bad for a song less than 24 hours old!!

Thanks ISBW - it's been a labour of love this, and if i'd know just how much hard work it was going to be I maybe wouldn't have attempted it! You'll have to do a post on all that Canvey naughtiness you were told!

EF - So far I've been to Canvet 4 times for this project, and I've grown quite fond of the place during that time. There's a real different feel about it, a real 'island mentality'. It's compact, yet has everything you need right on the doorstep...

JM - Deffo let me know if you ever head down to Oil City, we'll hook up, and I'll give you the tour!Pileyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15540380685492699957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47636629640428119.post-48556550025703670732010-07-21T23:40:09.571+01:002010-07-21T23:40:09.571+01:00Thanks everyone for your comments, I really apprec...Thanks everyone for your comments, I really appreciate them..

Carl - I know what you mean about Lee looking like he 'meant' it. He was never into half measures of going through the motions, he lived for that band. In the film there is a story that the day he found out he had cancer they played a gig, and his performance was still 100%. A true performer. The Grand pub will turn up in part 3 btw!

Cheers Marmite - Milk and alcohol was a defining moment wasn't it? When so many people 'our age' sort of found them for the first time. What a song though, and still sound fantastic.

Nice one Dan, ta. OF COURSE it was a Kahlua bottle, but I was speaking as a 12 year old Piley, who was unaware of the subtleties od booze. It just looked like a beer bottle back then. Nowadays of course I know better... (am I getting away with it??!)

Mondo - I think you nailed it there, there's something extra special knowing we hit all the same venues in out time too (and there's more to come to, one inparticular that you and I spent half our ife at!)

Didn't know that about Malcom no. When he was on tour (in the UK and Europe) he'd always take time out to wax lyrical about his favourite food.John Meddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10547777949324509522noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47636629640428119.post-33491014970440100662010-07-21T20:40:06.494+01:002010-07-21T20:40:06.494+01:00Great stuff mate and you made Canvey look appealin...Great stuff mate and you made Canvey look appealing which is a considerable effort. Is he still alive? He didn't come across at all well as portrayed in the recent Joe Meek biopic - perhaps he got nicer as he got older?

I got into Dr Feelgood via Radio Caroline, would you believe, which I listened to avidly in the mid-late Seventies, and which played a hugely eclectic and interesting variety of music. Also, my best friend's naughty big sister used to go and see them and bring us back tales of Canvey Island naughtiness. I didn't actually see them myself till 83, though they had lost none of their power (and were evidently on top form in all areas, bringing their own small army of lurex-clad scary groupies to sit on the stage and keep us youngsters at bay.). They were amazing.

Essex can be an ugly brute of a place (I speak as one born and bred there), but it didn't half throw up some blinding music back then (don't mention The Dooleys.).Kolley Kibberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07055145770836351738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47636629640428119.post-9455287086786800042010-07-21T16:11:52.441+01:002010-07-21T16:11:52.441+01:00Amazing that Wilko wrote She Does It Right only th...Amazing that Wilko wrote She Does It Right only the evening before its banged out on the radio!
I'd like to hear that Bob Harris Show, see how it sounds at such an early stage.
I don't ever recall carrying a record into school for days on end P...but then I am a Northern lass so it was more likely to be a cow on a lead or something :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47636629640428119.post-13628405589747370302010-07-21T15:29:06.126+01:002010-07-21T15:29:06.126+01:00I like the name Pigboy Charlie better, lol !I like the name Pigboy Charlie better, lol !Heffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13396114362826135207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47636629640428119.post-85022749427916127442010-07-21T14:54:04.650+01:002010-07-21T14:54:04.650+01:00Incredible stuff P. As someone who's come to the music scene rather late, I only really became aware of Feelgood a few weeks back when I saw Oil City Confidential as part of the Southend Film Festival. I didn't know anything about them, hadn't the first clue about what their music was like, and ended up sitting in the seat directly behind Wilko Johnson!

As soon as the song Milk & Alcohol appeared on the soundtrack, I thought "Ahhh, so THAT'S who Dr Feelgood are!".

Since then, I've been catching up with their stuff and am fully converted to the cause! This article was fascinating and has really helped to fill in the background for me.

One small point - surely the cover of the Milk & Alcohol single is based on a bottle of Kahlua, not beer? Indeed, Kalhua is frequently added to milk, along with vodka, to make the delicious 'White Russian', much beloved by legions of The Big Lebowski fans.

Apart from that minor criticism, a brilliant post. ;o)Danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01773088730561800442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47636629640428119.post-31116280001682979902010-07-21T12:52:26.995+01:002010-07-21T12:52:26.995+01:00Great stuff Mr P. Brilleaux was one of the best front men i've ever seen. No mike stand tossing and strutting for him. He used to shake his head side to side real quick to shake off the sweat and prowled the stage and he always looked like he MEANT it up there. Through mutual friends who used to work for Feelgood i've got to know Sparko a little and he is a lovely guy and it's great when he starts telling stories from those days. He spoke fondly of Lemmy who Feelgood toured with in Hawkwind (what a miss match eh ? but i love both bands , what a bill). I used to drink in the Grand in Leigh for many years and saw Brilleaux in the back bar many times but never got up the courage to say any thing, he had presence even off stage. They really were part of the spark that helped ignited punk, pure energy. If you like Feelgood then check out a couple of CD's by Lew Lewis , Save The Wail and BBC Sessions. Both high energy R&B and absolutely superb mate.By the way this was when R&B meant rythem and blues NOT WATERED DOWN SOUL PAP !!! as it does today!!!!!. You cant beat songs like Milk & Alcohol , Down At The Doctors , Roxette, She Does It Right etc etc. It's Rock N Roll no more no less. Look forward to part two mate.

Carl.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
